Thigh Lift Surgery in Sarasota, FL

Remove Thigh Skin That Stayed Behind After the Weight

A thigh lift removes loose, hanging skin from the upper legs and tightens what remains. It's almost always an operation for people who've lost a significant amount of weight and found that their skin didn't shrink with them.

The complaints that bring patients in are practical rather than cosmetic. Skin that chafes and causes rashes. Skin that bunches under clothing. Skin that makes walking or exercising uncomfortable. These are real daily problems, and no amount of training resolves them, because muscle underneath doesn't fill loose skin back out.

This is one of the more demanding contouring operations, with a visible scar and a recovery that asks something of you. Dr. Alissa Shulman has been a board-certified plastic surgeon since 2002, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.), and has practiced since 2000. She'll be straight with you about both.

Thigh Lift

Is a Thigh Lift Right for You

Know Whether You Need Skin Removed or Only Fat

You're a candidate if you have loose, hanging thigh skin, your weight has been stable for at least six months, and you've accepted that the trade is a permanent scar.

A thigh lift is usually the right operation when:

  • Skin on your inner thighs hangs or folds when you stand.
  • Chafing, rashes, or skin irritation between the thighs is a recurring problem.
  • You've lost a large amount of weight, through diet, bariatric surgery, or medication.

Thigh and hip liposuction is the better choice when your skin still has good tone and the issue is fat you can pinch. That's a substantially smaller operation with a faster recovery and no visible scar, and Dr. Shulman will point you there if it fits.

Weight stability matters more here than almost anywhere else. If you're still actively losing, waiting is genuinely the better call, because further loss creates new looseness and can mean repeating the operation. Dr. Shulman would rather have you come back in a year.

What Happens, Step by Step

Follow a Thigh Lift From Planning Through Surgery

A thigh lift is usually two to three hours under general anesthesia, meaning you're fully asleep. Most are outpatient, though extensive cases sometimes involve an overnight stay.

  • Your consultation. Dr. Shulman examines you standing, since thigh skin hangs differently upright, and assesses how much needs removing and where. She explains which incision pattern your case calls for and marks roughly where it would sit. She quotes you herself.
  • Choosing the incision. Looseness confined to the upper inner thigh can often be treated through an incision hidden in the groin crease. More extensive looseness running toward the knee needs a vertical incision along the inner thigh, which is considerably more visible. Which one you need is determined by how much skin there is, not by preference, and she'll be direct about that.
  • The operation. She removes the excess skin and some fat, often combining liposuction to refine the contour, then closes in layers and anchors the deeper tissue so tension doesn't fall on the scar line. Anchoring matters here, because gravity works against inner thigh closures more than most.
  • Right after. You'll wake up in compression garments. Walking will be uncomfortable and you'll move slowly for the first several days. Arrange help at home and a driver.

Thigh Lift Recovery Timeline

Plan for a Demanding First Two Weeks

Most patients need two to three weeks before returning to desk work and around six to eight weeks before full exercise. Recovery is harder than thigh liposuction, largely because the incision sits where your legs move against each other constantly.

  • The first week. Swelling, soreness, and limited mobility. Sitting and walking both put tension on the closure, so you'll move carefully. Drains are sometimes used. Compression garments are worn continuously.
  • Weeks two and three. Mobility improves noticeably and many desk workers return near the end of this window. Still no heavy lifting and no exercise that stretches the inner thigh.
  • Weeks four through eight. Activity builds back in stages. Movements that pull on the inner thigh come last, since tension on a healing scar there widens it.
  • Months three to twelve. Swelling settles slowly in the lower body and the scar matures over the full year. Inner thigh scars are among the more difficult to heal well, because the area moves constantly and is prone to moisture. Following wound care instructions genuinely affects how yours turns out.

Risks Worth Understanding

Understand Why This Scar Is Harder to Heal

Wound healing problems are more common after thigh lift than after most contouring operations. The inner thigh moves with every step, sits in a warm and often moist area, and carries constant tension, all of which work against a clean scar. Widened scars, delayed healing, and small areas of separation are realistic possibilities rather than remote ones.

The scar is permanent. A groin crease incision is reasonably well hidden. A vertical inner thigh incision is not, and it's visible in shorts and swimwear. Dr. Shulman will tell you which one your case requires before you commit, because that's often the deciding factor.

Other risks include fluid collection, infection, numbness along the inner thigh, asymmetry, and swelling that persists for months. There's also a possibility that the scar migrates downward over time if deeper tissue isn't well anchored, which is why closure technique matters. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes patient safety guidance on thigh lift surgery, and Dr. Shulman will go through your specific risks with you.

Paying for a Thigh Lift

Understand the Cost and Your Payment Options

Cost depends on which incision pattern your case requires, whether liposuction is combined, operating time, and facility and anesthesia fees. A groin crease procedure sits below a full vertical thigh lift.

A thigh lift is cosmetic, so insurance doesn't cover it, even when chafing and recurring rashes are the reason you're seeking it. Sovereign Plastic Surgery bills insurance only for breast reconstruction after cancer surgery. Dr. Shulman quotes you directly at your consultation, your consultation fee applies toward surgery if you proceed, and financing is available through CareCredit and Cherry. See our payment options and financing page.

Why Patients Choose Sovereign Plastic Surgery

Work With a Surgeon Who Won't Undersell the Recovery

Sovereign Plastic Surgery is a solo practice. Dr. Shulman runs your consultation, performs your surgery, quotes your price, and sees you at every follow-up. Patients reach her directly afterward, which matters here because thigh lift wounds need watching.

This is not an operation she talks people into. The scar is real, the healing is genuinely harder than average, and the patients who do best are the ones who understood that going in. If you're on the fence after hearing the full picture, she'll tell you that waiting or choosing liposuction instead is a reasonable decision.

You don't have to take our word for any of it. Patients describe their own results and their own care in their own words, and you can read reviews from Sovereign Plastic Surgery patients before you book.

About Your Surgeon

Meet the Surgeon Performing Your Thigh Lift

Dr. Shulman has been a board-certified plastic surgeon since 2002, has practiced since 2000, and opened Sovereign Plastic Surgery in Sarasota in 2009. She was the first woman to serve as Chief of Surgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, next door to her office, and the only plastic surgeon ever appointed Chief of Staff there. Her surgical background means wound care and healing are things she manages closely rather than delegating. She works below the neck only. Read Dr. Shulman's full background and credentials.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the incision your case requires. A groin crease incision is fairly well hidden by underwear and swimwear. A vertical incision running down the inner thigh is visible in shorts and swimwear and doesn't disappear. How much skin needs removing determines which you need, so it isn't a matter of choice.

If your skin hangs, a thigh lift is the only operation that removes it. If your skin has decent tone and the issue is fat you can pinch, thigh and hip liposuction is far less invasive with no visible scar. Removing fat from beneath already-loose skin usually makes it hang more.

Plan on two to three weeks before desk work and six to eight weeks before full exercise. The first week is demanding because sitting and walking both pull on the incision. Inner thigh scars heal slowly, so wound care instructions matter more than usual.

Sovereign Plastic Surgery bills insurance only for breast reconstruction after cancer surgery, so a thigh lift here is self-pay. Some plans elsewhere occasionally consider skin removal medically necessary for documented recurring infections, though approval is difficult and varies widely. Financing is available through CareCredit and Cherry.
