Thigh and Hip Liposuction in Sarasota, FL
Reshape the Thighs and Hips to Reach Your Goals
Thigh liposuction removes fat from the outer thighs, inner thighs, and hips to change your lower body silhouette. For many women these are the most stubborn areas on the body, because where fat sits is largely genetic and no exercise targets one region.
The goal here isn't smaller. It's proportional. The lower body is where an overly aggressive result is most obvious, because removing too much from the wrong spot leaves dents and an unnatural transition between treated and untreated areas. Restraint is the skill.
Dr. Alissa Shulman has been a board-certified plastic surgeon since 2002 and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.). She has practiced since 2000 and has been in Sarasota since 2009. She's also a trained sculptor, and she approaches the lower body as a question of line and balance rather than volume removed.

Is Thigh Liposuction Right for You
Know Which Areas Respond and Which Don't
You're a good candidate if you have pinchable fat on your thighs or hips, your skin still has decent elasticity, and your weight has been stable for several months.
The areas treated most successfully are:
- Outer thighs, sometimes called saddlebags, which usually respond well and make a visible difference to how trousers fit.
- Hips and the area just below the waist, often treated together with the outer thigh for a smooth line.
- Inner thighs, which respond well but need a conservative approach, since skin there is thinner and less elastic.
Liposuction won't improve cellulite, and it's important to say so plainly, because cellulite is caused by fibrous bands tethering the skin rather than by the fat itself. Removing fat beneath dimpled skin sometimes makes the dimpling more noticeable.
If your main issue is loose, hanging skin rather than fat, a thigh lift removes skin in a way liposuction cannot. That's a bigger operation with a visible scar, and Dr. Shulman will explain the trade honestly rather than steering you toward either one.
What Happens, Step by Step
Follow Lower Body Contouring From Planning to Result
Thigh and hip liposuction is an outpatient operation, usually one to two hours under general anesthesia, meaning you're fully asleep. Time depends on how many areas are treated.
- Your consultation. Dr. Shulman examines you standing, since thigh and hip fat sits completely differently when you're upright. She checks skin elasticity, looks at how your outer thigh transitions into your hip and buttock, and explains which areas she'd treat together. She quotes you herself.
- Planning the transitions. This is the part that separates a natural result from an obvious one. Treating the outer thigh alone can leave a visible step where the treated area meets the untreated hip, so she usually plans them as one continuous zone and feathers the edges rather than working in isolated patches.
- The operation. Through small incisions placed in creases where they'll be inconspicuous, she introduces fluid that numbs the area and limits bleeding, then removes fat evenly with a narrow tube called a cannula. On the inner thigh she works conservatively, because over-removal there produces loose skin that's difficult to correct.
- Reusing the fat. Thigh and hip fat is commonly used for fat grafting elsewhere, whether to the breast or to correct a contour dent. Many patients have both done in one operation.
- Right after. You'll wake up in a compression garment covering the treated areas. Most patients go home the same day with a driver.
Thigh and Hip Liposuction Recovery
Expect Walking to Be Uncomfortable at First
Most patients return to desk work within about a week and to full exercise around four to six weeks. Lower body liposuction differs from abdominal in one practical way: walking and sitting are both affected, so the first few days interfere with ordinary movement more than patients expect.
- The first week. Soreness, bruising, and swelling, with tightness when you walk. Bruising on the thighs tends to be more dramatic than elsewhere and can look alarming without meaning anything is wrong. You'll wear your compression garment continuously.
- Weeks two and three. Bruising fades and most desk workers are back. Swelling in the lower body is slower to resolve than in the abdomen, partly because gravity works against you.
- Weeks four through six. Activity builds back, with clearance for full exercise around four to six weeks.
- Months three to six. Your real result appears here. Lower body swelling is persistent, and standing all day will make your thighs feel fuller well into the recovery. Judging the outcome before three months isn't meaningful.
Risks Worth Understanding
Understand Why Restraint Matters on the Lower Body
Contour irregularity is the main risk, and the thighs are where it shows most. Dents, waviness, and visible steps between treated and untreated areas are the usual complaints, and they're harder to correct than to prevent. This is why a conservative approach beats an aggressive one here.
The inner thigh deserves specific mention. Skin there is thin and less elastic, and removing too much fat can leave loose skin that looks worse than what you started with. Dr. Shulman treats the inner thigh cautiously for that reason, and will tell you if your skin quality means you'd do better with a different operation.
Other risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, changes in skin sensation that usually improve over months, and asymmetry between legs. Swelling in the lower body lasts longer than most patients anticipate. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes patient safety guidance on liposuction, and Dr. Shulman will review your specific risks with you.
Paying for Thigh and Hip Liposuction
Understand the Cost and Your Payment Options
Cost depends on how many areas you treat, operating time, and facility and anesthesia fees. Treating outer thighs and hips together usually costs more than one zone alone but produces a smoother line, which is generally worth it.
Liposuction is cosmetic, so insurance doesn't cover it. Sovereign Plastic Surgery bills insurance only for breast reconstruction after cancer surgery. Dr. Shulman quotes you directly at your consultation, your consultation fee applies toward surgery if you proceed, and financing is available through CareCredit and Cherry. See our payment options and financing page.
Why Patients Choose Sovereign Plastic Surgery
Work With a Surgeon Who Aims for a Line, Not a Number
Sovereign Plastic Surgery is a solo practice. Dr. Shulman runs your consultation, performs your surgery, quotes your price, and sees you at every follow-up. Patients reach her directly afterward.
She's also been clear about the aesthetic she works toward. She's said plainly that she'd rather treat a patient carrying twenty extra pounds than one who's underweight, and she isn't interested in chasing a narrow ideal. On the lower body that translates into taking less rather than more, because the thighs punish over-correction more than any other area.
You don't have to take our word for any of it. Patients describe their own results and their own care in their own words, and you can read reviews from Sovereign Plastic Surgery patients before you book.
About Your Surgeon
Meet the Surgeon Contouring Your Lower Body
Dr. Shulman has been a board-certified plastic surgeon since 2002, has practiced since 2000, and opened Sovereign Plastic Surgery in Sarasota in 2009. She was the first woman to serve as Chief of Surgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, next door to her office, and the only plastic surgeon ever appointed Chief of Staff there. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture alongside her medical training, and lower body contouring is as close to sculpting as surgery gets. She works below the neck only. Frequently Asked Questions
No. Cellulite is caused by fibrous bands that tether skin to deeper tissue, not by the fat itself, so removing fat doesn't release them. In some cases dimpling looks slightly more noticeable afterward. Any practice promising liposuction will fix cellulite is overselling.
You can, though Dr. Shulman approaches the inner thigh conservatively because the skin there is thin and less elastic. Over-removal can leave loose skin that's harder to fix than the original concern. She'll assess your skin quality and tell you how much is safe to take.
Most patients return to desk work in about a week and to full exercise around four to six weeks. Walking and sitting are uncomfortable for the first several days. Lower body swelling resolves slowly, so your real result usually isn't visible until three to six months.
If the issue is fat and your skin still has decent tone, liposuction. If the issue is loose, hanging skin, usually after major weight loss, a thigh lift removes the skin but leaves a visible scar. Dr. Shulman will tell you which problem you actually have.
Scheduling is easy. You can request an appointment online or call the office at 941-366-5476, and the team will call you back to confirm a time. You'll meet Dr. Shulman herself. We look forward to seeing you.
