A Solo Sarasota Practice Since 2009

Get to Know the Surgeon Who Will Handle Every Step of Your Care

Dr. Alissa Shulman finished her training in 2000 and practiced in South Bend, Indiana until moving to Sarasota in 2009, where she opened Sovereign Plastic Surgery as a solo practice. Solo means what it sounds like. She meets you at your consultation, performs your surgery, and sees you at every follow-up. She gives you your quote herself, and she explains your options herself. For a decision this personal, that matters.

Long before medical school, Dr. Shulman was an artist. She drew her first horse head at two, sewed by hand at four, and sculpted her first piece in first grade. She went on to earn both a Bachelor of Arts in anatomy and physiology and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture. That background is still visible in the office, where the resin doors that look like stained glass, the textured walls, and the artwork are all hers. It also shapes how she plans surgery, because proportion and balance are the same problems a sculptor solves.

She's an educator before she's a salesperson. If you don't need an operation, she'll tell you. If another surgeon in town is a better fit for what you want, she'll tell you that too. There's no hard sell here and no rush, and you'll leave your consultation understanding why she recommended what she recommended.

Dr. Shulman has been a board-certified plastic surgeon since 2002 and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.). She was the first woman to serve as Chief of Surgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, which sits next door to the office, and the only plastic surgeon ever appointed Chief of Staff there. She's also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

That distinction matters more than most patients realize. A board-certified plastic surgeon completes different training than a cosmetic surgeon, and holds privileges at the local hospital. If something goes wrong after surgery elsewhere, a surgeon without those privileges can't admit you, can't visit you, and often can't be reached at all.

Outside the office, she's been married more than 20 years and is the mom of two daughters in college, so she understands firsthand how a body changes over a life. If you'd like to talk through what's on your mind, request an appointment with Dr. Shulman and she'll take it from there.
