Abdominal Liposuction in Sarasota, FL

Flatten the Midsection That Won't Respond to Anything Else

Abdominal liposuction removes fat from the upper belly, lower belly, and waist to change the shape of your midsection. It's the most requested area in plastic surgery, and also the one where expectations most often need adjusting.

Liposuction removes fat sitting just under the skin. It doesn't tighten loose skin, repair abdominal muscles that separated during pregnancy, or reach the deeper fat that sits around your organs. Understanding that up front is the difference between being delighted and being disappointed.

Dr. Alissa Shulman has been a board-certified plastic surgeon since 2002 and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.). She has practiced since 2000 and has been in Sarasota since 2009. She'll examine you, tell you which type of abdomen you have, and be direct if liposuction isn't the operation that gets you where you want to go.

Abdominal Liposuction

Is Abdominal Liposuction Your Procedure

Match Your Abdomen to the Right Operation

You're a strong candidate for abdominal liposuction if you have fat you can pinch, your skin still springs back when you release it, and your weight has been stable for several months.

Liposuction is likely the right choice when:

  • Your skin has good tone and isn't loose or hanging.
  • You have distinct pockets of fat rather than generalized fullness.
  • You haven't had pregnancies that separated your abdominal muscles.

A tummy tuck is likely the better choice when:

  • You have loose or hanging skin, especially after pregnancy or weight loss.
  • Your abdominal muscles have separated, which liposuction cannot repair.
  • Your belly stays rounded even when you're at a weight you're happy with.

If your abdomen is firm and round rather than pinchable, the fat may be deeper, around your organs, where liposuction can't reach. That type responds to weight loss rather than surgery, and Dr. Shulman will tell you so rather than operating for a result she can't deliver.

What Happens, Step by Step

Follow Abdominal Liposuction From Marking to Recovery

Abdominal liposuction is an outpatient operation, usually one to two hours, performed under general anesthesia, meaning you're fully asleep. Length depends on how many areas are treated.

  • Your consultation. Dr. Shulman examines your abdomen standing and lying down, checks your skin quality by pinching and releasing, and looks for muscle separation. She explains which areas she'd treat and quotes you herself. Expect about 40 minutes.
  • Marking and planning. She marks you standing, because fat sits differently when you're upright, and the result has to look right in real life rather than on an operating table. She typically treats the upper and lower abdomen together with the waist, since treating one area alone often produces an uneven transition.
  • The operation. Through several small incisions, usually hidden in natural creases, she introduces a fluid that numbs the area and reduces bleeding, then uses a narrow tube called a cannula to loosen and suction fat evenly. Even removal matters more than total volume removed, because unevenness is what makes a result look operated on.
  • Reusing the fat. If you want volume added elsewhere, the fat removed can be purified and placed in the same operation. See fat grafting for how that works.
  • Right after. You'll wake up in a compression garment. Most patients go home the same day with a driver and describe the feeling as deep soreness, like an intense workout.

Abdominal Liposuction Recovery

Wear the Garment and Wait Out the Swelling

Most patients return to desk work within about a week and to full exercise around four to six weeks. The compression garment is the part people underestimate, and wearing it as directed genuinely affects your result.

  • The first week. Soreness, bruising, swelling, and some fluid drainage from the incisions in the first day or two, which is normal. You'll wear your compression garment continuously. Walking regularly helps circulation.
  • Weeks two and three. Bruising fades and most desk workers are back. You'll still be swollen and shouldn't judge anything yet. Garment wear usually continues, often shifting to daytime only.
  • Weeks four through six. Activity builds back, with clearance for full exercise around four to six weeks depending on how much area was treated.
  • Months three to six. This is when your result actually appears. Swelling after abdominal liposuction is persistent and resolves slowly, and many patients go through a stretch around weeks three to six convinced nothing changed. That's swelling, not the outcome.

Risks Worth Understanding

Understand Contour Risks and Volume Limits

The most common disappointments after liposuction are contour irregularities: dents, ripples, or uneven areas where fat was removed unevenly. Skin that has lost elasticity is more prone to this, which is part of why skin quality drives the decision about which operation you have.

Other risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, changes in skin sensation that usually improve over months, and asymmetry between sides. Loose skin can also become more noticeable once the fat beneath it is gone, which is why patients with poor skin tone are often better served by a skin-removing procedure.

There are also limits on how much fat can safely be removed in one operation, and on combining large-volume liposuction with other procedures. Those limits exist for good reasons and Dr. Shulman follows them, even when a patient would prefer more done at once. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes patient safety guidance on liposuction, and she'll go through your specific risks with you.

Paying for Abdominal Liposuction

Understand the Cost and Your Payment Options

Cost depends on how many areas you're treating, how long the operation takes, and facility and anesthesia fees. Treating the abdomen and waist together costs more than one small area but usually delivers a better-looking result than treating a single zone in isolation.

Liposuction is cosmetic, so insurance doesn't cover it. Sovereign Plastic Surgery bills insurance only for breast reconstruction after cancer surgery. Dr. Shulman quotes you directly at your consultation rather than sending you to a coordinator, and your consultation fee applies toward surgery if you proceed. Financing is available through CareCredit and Cherry. See our payment options and financing page.

Why Patients Choose Sovereign Plastic Surgery

Work With a Surgeon Who Won't Sell You the Wrong Operation

Sovereign Plastic Surgery is a solo practice. Dr. Shulman runs your consultation, performs your surgery, quotes your price, and sees you at every follow-up. Patients reach her directly afterward.

Abdominal liposuction is a procedure where honesty at the consultation matters more than technique. Plenty of patients who want liposuction would get a far better result from a tummy tuck, and plenty who ask about a tummy tuck need less than they think. Dr. Shulman has spent a career telling patients which one they actually need, including when the answer is neither.

You don't have to take our word for any of it. Patients describe their own results and their own care in their own words, and you can read reviews from Sovereign Plastic Surgery patients before you book.

About Your Surgeon

Meet the Surgeon Performing Your Liposuction

Dr. Shulman has been a board-certified plastic surgeon since 2002, has practiced since 2000, and opened Sovereign Plastic Surgery in Sarasota in 2009. She was the first woman to serve as Chief of Surgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, next door to her office, and the only plastic surgeon ever appointed Chief of Staff there. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture alongside her medical training, and contouring is where that training shows most directly. She works below the neck only. Frequently Asked Questions

Pinch your abdomen and let go. If the skin springs back and you can grab a layer of fat, liposuction is likely your procedure. If the skin is loose, hangs, or your muscles separated during pregnancy, a tummy tuck addresses what liposuction can't. Many patients need one clearly more than the other, and Dr. Shulman will tell you which.

The fat cells removed don't return. The cells remaining in other areas can still enlarge if you gain weight, so your shape can change over time even though the treated area has fewer cells. Liposuction is not a substitute for maintaining your weight, and it isn't a weight loss procedure.

Most patients return to desk work in about a week and to full exercise around four to six weeks. You'll wear a compression garment for several weeks. Swelling is persistent after abdominal liposuction, and your real result usually isn't visible until three to six months.

Cost depends on how many areas are treated, operating time, and facility and anesthesia fees, so there's no single honest number to publish. Dr. Shulman gives you a specific quote at your consultation. Insurance doesn't cover cosmetic liposuction, and financing is available through CareCredit and Cherry.

Scheduling is easy. You can request an appointment online or call the office at 941-366-5476, and the team will call you back to confirm a time. You'll meet Dr. Shulman herself. We look forward to seeing you.
